• We LOVE the How Do Dinosaurs book, but this one does not follow suit. I read it and quickly returned it. Whereas the other 5 Dinosaur books we own walk through a few bad behaviors and directly say "No, a dinosaur doesn't... " then proceeds to list proper behavior for the given scenario, this book does not. I was excited for How do Dinosaurs Say I love You? because my son loves giving hugs and I knew he would love the cover before even opening the book! This book shares how the kid /dinosaur was a complete brat, but because he gives "an adorable smile" or "blows a kiss", then his bratty behavior is ok? It doesn't even say "No, I dinosaur doesn't do this or that", it just glazes over that. Not at all what I was expecting. Bummer.
• This super fun series of books are sure to please all the dino lovers out there! My dino loving 4.5yr old can't get enough dinosaur books and I can't get enough of the creatively illustrated stories in this series as you journey through typical toddler and preschool behaviors with boundry testing, mood swinging picky"fun" (humorously illustrated) and still the undeniable love between parent and child. Great books to have in your little readers library!
• Gah! My son and I love reading these books and this one is no exception! The story goes through different parts of a "dinosaur's" (aka your child) day and the things that they did that upset their parents. And after each thing it tells something sweet that the "dinosaur" did that made its parents happy and showed love.
  This book is so sweet and always brings a smile to my face. My son, who doesn't quite get the symbolism, loves the dinosaurs and that each picture tells you what type of dinosaur it is. I guess there is something in it for both of us!
• I love this book, but Track 1 (with turn the page signals) doesn't work. The CD was made in a foreign country (although the English is flawless) which may have affected the quality. I was able to rip track 1 to a laptop, then kids could listen to it, but even then there were scratch sounds throughout the first few pages. I would NOT recommend buying this set.
• A fascinating book to showcase to children the great mystery of the ship Mary Celeste. Beautiful vibrant drawings and awesomely told to express the unknown reality, the truths and the situations that make this old tale create itself over time, as one of the great unsolved realities of the sea. Perfect for children. A great history lesson for show and tale, or story time. It explores Mary Celeste in an easy tale so that children can follow along and be amazed with. Loved the conclusion of it going over all the weird theories of how, or what happened to the crew. It explores all the popular tales of just what took place. A wonderfully drawn, told tale of this great unsolved mystery that will never be forgotten by time. Highly recommend for kids and even adults, because I really enjoyed it while reading it to Godson. Fascinating in every way.
• My 4 yr old son loves the How Do Dinosaurs... series. We have some of the board books like How Do Dinosaurs Count To Ten?, and some of the other hardcovers, such as How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? and How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?.
  
  How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You? explains to children that their parents love them all the time, even when they are naughty or moody. Usually the books in this series contrast bad behavior with good behavior, and end on a postive note. Not only are they entertaining, but if you look closely at the illustrations, the names of the dinosaurs are included on each page, adding to the educational value of each book.
  
  I added this one to my son's collection because I wanted him to realize that a good parent loves their child unconditionally, no one is perfect, and everyone has had a bad day. He also has a huge interest in anything to do with dinosaurs.
  
  If your child loves these books, and would like something a little more serious, check out DK First Dinosaur Encyclopedia.
• In a day and age where some children do not always have the advantage of being taught etiquette, I find these books to be such a positive way to teach children kindness and manners. They have a sense of humor that both adults and children can enjoy and learn a positive message about so many different things. You cannot buy manners, you either have them or you don't. Kindness, respect, please and thank you can mean so much for any little thing in life and enrich your life at the same time. I love to give these books as presents because the provide a positive message on sometimes difficult things to express to any one at any age.
• I had this book as a kid and always loved the way the story was presented from the view of a native Tainu boy and didn’t praise Columbus. As a woman of Native American ancestry, I applaud this telling of the real “discovery” of indigenous people.

• This is one of the most important books about foreign policy, the middle east, and the limits of journalism (especially, as presented in the mass media) that I have ever read. This is not a chatty account of "How I learned to love Egyptian food when I lived in the Middle East." Instead, it is a highly readable but very powerful critique of modern journalism and how difficult it is for middle eastern correspondents to provide the context (background information) necessary for readers of the news to interpret it meaningfully. How the mainstream media manipulate the news (and hence, the reader) is discussed in detail. One of several examples given presents the reasons behind the superiority of Israeli over Palestianian attempts to influence Western public opinion. Also mentioned is the difficulty in obtaining reliable information about countries under dictatorship (no one talks on the record due to fear of official retribution; the absence of reliable statistical data, etc.). The discussion of the profound difference between the absence of free speech/journalism in middle eastern dictatorships (which the USA supports) and democracies is also compelling. Finally, the author points out how journalists routinely fail to mention the diversity of views in middle eastern countries. This is a book that I am certain that the major news networks wish had never been published. Mr. Luyendijk shows what persistent journalistic dedication to telling the truth and discussing alternative views of the same issue can create enlightenment and understanding.
• Well written, interesting, and with a unique point of view!
• A great insight how the news is cooked in the Middle East, from a guy who it experienced over a period of 5 years. After a 3 year experience of having lived in Saudi Arabia this book provides the best about what takes place (and what does not) by a long shot.
• I'm an American currently living in the Middle East and studying Arabic. This book is so helpful, it paints such a clear picture of "what" and "why" Americans think, when they think, about the Arab world. I am recommending it to all my friends and family back in the States. Hopefully it will help them see through the show that is the Western media and begin to think a little deeper about the average Arab guy and gal who really are just "people like us."

• I love this book and the artist. I have now discovered a new artist I enjoy.
• This book is a mixed bag for sure. I purchased it thinking it was another Jade Summer book since the covers were similar but it isn't. The art is a mix of really wonderful, good, and mediocre. There aren't any truly awful pieces but many anatomical errors make some pages a dud for me. Even so the good pages outweigh the bad and I am enjoying this book. For the price and the amount of pages it's a good buy.

• Very interesting book about some "not so hidden" secrets about the architecture of buildings, street layout and monument layout and design of our nations capital. Very interesting, makes me want to go for a visit, which I will probably do in the next few years both because I have been wanting to anyway and because this book has peaked my curiosity. If you are interested in this you may want to also check some materials from Scott Onstott who has a web page and You Tube videos that are very interesting, he is actually a mathematician and unlike some other weird videos his opinions have merit. It was actually through his recommendation that I got this book.
• This book is a one of a kind for its depth and breadth. There's nothing else out there that I've read that gets into the details of how the city of Washington was built, rebuilt, and then rebuilt again. It gets five stars just for the amount of information David Ovason put together to make this. BUT, the book's narrative is so meandering that it can be hard to follow at times. Even for someone who knows the history of DC, I found myself going back and rereading whole passages before moving on because of the nagging feeling that I was missing something.
  
  To his fault, Mr. Ovason takes for granted that the reader knows a lot about both astrology and astronomy. Pop quiz, quick! What's an azimuth?? What's the order of the Zodiac? Which came first, the Age of Virgo or the Age of Leo? Suffice it to say that you'll enjoy this book a lot more if you already know something about astrology and architecture.
  
  My recommendation? Before you read "The Secret Architecture of Our Nation's Capital" read "The Power of Stars How Celestial Observations Have Shaped Civilization" by Bryan Penprase. Penprase's book is a step-by-step guide to the zodiac and how it has played a role in architecture from ancient times until modern times.
  
  Once you're done with "The Power of Stars," read "The Secret Architecture of Our Nation's Capital." You'll enjoy it a lot more when you know what Mr. Ovason is talking about. Because of how it's organized, and for getting me lost half way through every chapter, I gave "The Secret Architecture of Our Nation's Capital" three stars. It's worth reading but you need some prep first!
• A remarkable amount of research has gone into this book. The previous reviewer complained that it was "undocumented" but why does the author need to document a road, a building, or a statue if it exists in plain sight and is common knowledge? This proves that the author's thesis touches a raw nerve to those who are comfortable only with conventional understandings of history that sugar coat the past and pull the wool over our eyes. Clearly, there was a powerful cult behind the formation of the United States. They were not devout Christians, but were committed only to the esoteric ideals of their own secret society. Ideals that apparently originate in ancient Egypt, not Jerusalem. The author, however, coming from a Christian background and perspective dances around this truth. He prefers to view them as Christians who were simply outside the mainstream. Their obssession with "Virgo" proves this, because as everyone knows Virgo represents the Virgin Mary, right? Wrong.
  
  The author fails to grasp this nettle and meanders into a neverland that maintains Washington's "Christianity," so we'll have to wait a while longer for the real story.
• Fascinating and engaging analysis, which must be reinforced by visiting the capital and literally seeing what the author is talking about. As a play must be seen (and not only read), in the same manner this book acquires a different feel and has a more powerful effect on the intellect when the text is visually juxtaposed to the real city.
• Very good information on our Captial and monuments. Do further research to clarify most of the information in this book. Very good resource.
• I just discovered the key to selling a new book, put the word Secret in the title. Currently books with the Secret are selling like Gangbusters, The Secret by Rhonda Bryne and the sequels, The Secret Life of Bees, according to , there are over 74,725 book with Secret in the title.
  Okay so let's talk about this book, it is a comprehensive history which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. The book moves slowly, the author did his research and I have no quibble with that - I know this topic; however, the significance of why the Freemasons chose to do things that have been done, in the manner that they did is just not revealed, I was really disappointed because there is some terrific information out there and I am well versed in this topic based on my own research. I am wondering if this is because he wasn't allowed to "get to the point", no pun intended. I think the true reason he left out answers to why (Astrology is important but he didn't say why among other points never addressed is because Mason's aren't allowed to share the key precepts of their faith or beliefs to the uninitiated - that leaves out all females and many men.
  There are many good books out there to understand the significance of Masonry -you won't find them by doing an internet search using the word - avoid the publications that will come up will give you books written by Masons (who often don't share that information, up front) these books reveal much of the same stuff rehashed, instead try books by William Schnoebelen, John Ankerberg, David Weldon, Tom C. McKenney, or anything Published by Chick Publications all provided excellent, well documented, significant information -though Ankerberg is very dry.
• Somewhat pedantic this book is facinating with its connections both real abd co-incidental in DC. Whether or not the assumptions are valid the detail included lease good evidence for the reader to make a decision.
• Great read it gives you a objective knowledge of religion

• Excellent resource for educators, allows to see things in class from a fresh perspective and gives loads of practical examples to the differently motivated students in ones charge. The author is both humble but firm and backs up his assertions with convincing stories and personal experiences during his past extensive career as an educational specialist working with both average and challenged kids.
  Note This author firmly believes that the two genders learn and retain information differently, each in there own fashion and that classes would be better off if boys and girls would be separated for instruction, both for the "impressing each other" and "not being embarrassed if-I-don't-conform-to-the-stereotype" factor and for the academic learning of knowledge -- one in which the male/ female process info differently and are "wired" to have different styles conducive to that learning experience.
• I enjoyed reading the book cover to cover, and took quite a few notes to help me with my ADHD son. Lavoie has a lot of experience and really loves his work, so the book is bound to have plenty of great tips. I did not agree with every idea, and I think its view of human motivation is extremely oversimplified and geared only to the modern culture, and to education as it is practiced in a modern school. But these limitations are acceptable, since the book is intended for teachers in just that environment.
  
  Realistically, while it is not acceptable to "give up" on any kid, it also bears mentioning that time and human resources are really limited in a classroom. It is not unreasonable to concentrate educational efforts on those more easily motivated kids who will benefit from them the most, so as to get the most use out of the 1100 or so hours actually available. People who are making their best efforts need to cut themselves some slack if not every kid responds.
  
  The book could have been improved by being somewhat shorter, and organized so as to help busy people get those few tips or techniques that would help them the most. Too many ideas, not prioritized, only manage to overwhelm people, or to move them in an unfocused and slapdash manner. Readers should use the book with heavy note taking in mind to get good value from the material.
• Wow, what a helpful book. The author writes with authority and compassion on a topic fraught with frustration -- how do you help a child want to do well when experience has taught him that hard work will probably not result in success? I borrowed this book from the library and am buying my own copy, the better to implement some of his terrific suggestions. I read this as a parent of a child with a diagnosis of ADHD and ODD, and his suggestions on dealing with kids with attention problems is extremely helpful. Almost better was his advice for figuring out what motivates your child. The section on kids motivated by power gets to the heart of many of the ODD problems we've been having with my child, and I can see where his suggestions will make a real difference for us. I'm so happy I found this book.
• President Obama should award.him with some medal for comapssion and understanding. He understands students and offers sound advice on how to help them. There are some paradigm shifting suggestions here that can help teachers struggling with learners who appear reluctant. The first step is to understand that they might want to learn, but have a motivation, for example, not to risk looking stupid, that is stronger than their desire to learn. Once teachers help bridge that, they can help that student thrive. My favorite piece so far is success deprivation, ehich describes that we focus on gold star behavior-only celebrating our best, instead of celebrating all students'personal bests-displaying works that have progression. FAT CITY video is a must watch also by him. It was a humbling experience.
• Lavoie is a skilled writer who has over thirty years experience working with children in schools and with children with learning disabilities. His depth of caring and his compassion for all children is clear throughout the book as he seeks parents and teachers to do the right thing for children even if it means being less convenient or abandoning a philosophy they thought was `one right way of doing things'.
  
  It seemed to me that Lavoie wanted to condense all that he's learned in his career into one volume which led me to feel `information overload' more than once. The book is nearly 400 pages, is not large font and does not have much white space on the page, this is information dense (which can be a good thing, it certainly is a good value for the money but on the other hand it may overwhelm some readers). I read the book cover to cover, slowly, carefully and thoughtfully and it took me two months to get through it. My volume is filled with margin notes and underlines, it's that type of book!
  
  Reviewing this is not an easy task to say the least. I say these things not to complain but to give you an indication that this book is a valuable compilation of LOTS of information to digest. It has many ideas and even overlapping into parenting realms of adult/child relations, respect, communication, rules, behavior, discipline and punishment. It also has a few systems and approaches the likes of which other authors have similarly put into smaller individual books with just one system. Again this one volume provides a lot of information to process and put into action and it requires an open-minded reader who might have to admit they've been doing a wrong thing or two and to hear Lavoie's ideas for how they should change (to get the child motivated about learning). The book is overarching and is a work that some other authors might have chosen to chop up to create at least four different books!
  
  The book is intended for two main parties parents of schooled children and school teachers and it has a special interest to parents of children with learning disabilities. I feel that some information provided for parents should be read by the teachers and some provided with practical information only for teachers to use in their classrooms should be read by the parents. In other words I advise that both parents and teachers should read the whole book cover to cover. If you skip some chapters you will miss important nuggets of information.
  
  Lavoie provides insight into the minds of children with various learning disabilities and also ADD/ADHD and tells why most suffer with learned helplessness that leads to a lack of motivation. Why children with learning disabilities will not perform well with popular behavioral modification classroom tactics or with rewards programs is fully explained. He often refers to the writings and ideas of MEL LEVINE such as in the book A MIND AT A TIME.
  
  In short to create an ideal environment all negative influences should be removed and then more ideal and better practices should be put into place. If the environment is right then the formerly unmotivated child may switch gears to be motivated and have success in school (and in life).
  
  The book provides lots of information for parents to understand their children, whether they have a learning disability or not. It tells some inside information usually only known to teachers that may help the parent advocate for their child. It provides information on how to help a child with homework and how to be an active partner with the school but not cross the line to be a problem in the child's school.
  
  Another topic touched upon is parenting or dealing with a student who is strong-willed and who is `motivated by power'. Some information about those types of children overlaps with and some provides contradictory advice from what some parenting books on the market about those types of children say. Lavoie is in the camp of a kinder, gentler parenting style. Although he never mentions him I recognized some of the same parenting strategies and communication and praise recommendations as being in line with WILLIAM SEARS M.D., author or THE DISCIPLINE BOOK and THE SUCCESSFUL CHILD (to name just two). Some similarities about teaching, learning, schools and respect are in line with the ideas and books of JOHN HOLT such as in his book HOW CHILDREN FAIL.
  
  Teachers may be surprised to learn Lavoie's opinions on some common classroom learning strategies and discipline strategies because he feels they often will produce the opposite effect than they intend to (a shocking notion for some to accept). Lots of discussion about rewards systems is included along with research citations to back up the opinions. The book PUNISHED BY REWARDS is frequently referred to and Lavoie is on the same page as author ALFIE KOHN. Lavoie provides a ton of information to school teachers about topics such as behavior expectations, class rules, punishment methods such as punishing by taking away recess, and the really sick policies some teachers have for restricting use of the restroom. (Much of that information about praise, rewards and behavioral mod systems also applies to parents and systems used in the home.)
  
  This book is also very much in line with the issue of learning styles and that each child is unique. Thinking that every child is made from the same mold and that all can be treated in a cookie cutter fashion is something that Lavoie rallies against. It is clear that Lavoie realizes the damage that children can suffer from when treated in a `one size fits all' education model (so often used in public school systems).
  
  The bulk of the book focuses on a motivation system for children to get them to like learning, to actually do the school work , to develop an internal motivation, and have them learn the information also. A short checklist of personality traits is given and a parent and teacher can try to figure out where each child fits on the spectrum of what motivates them. This information is useful also to parents and can apply to home life and daily interactions with children having nothing to do with school or doing homework.
  
  After figuring out the "eight forces of motivation" Lavoie maps out six types of learning experiences that match up with the eight different motivator forces. The gist is the teacher will provide flexibility in learning experiences within the classroom (while all students work toward the same learning goal) and that the teacher will change the work done in the class to provide each unique child with a unique learning experience that touches upon their main internal motivators. By providing each child with work that `moves them' and by removing other negative influences addressed elsewhere in the book, the student will be internally motivated to do their schoolwork , will enjoy learning and will actually learn what they are supposed to learn (and some in spite of their learning disabilities). I love the idea and as a homeschooling mother I can say this does work but frankly how it can work for a class of twenty or so children, some with learning disabilities and all while trying to jump through hoops of standardized testing for NCLB with good scores I don't know how one teacher can make this happen in real life (the realist in me is talking here, sorry for my cynicism).
  
  One criticism I have is regarding the chapter for "the people oriented child". I felt the information in this chapter was weak as it had little to do with teaching the child academics (like all the other sections had) Oddly the chapter had buried within it, mostly information that I feel is foundational and deserves to be its own chapter in and of itself as it applies to ALL children. I am referring to the teacher having respect for children and how all adults should treat children (parents too). It goes into detail about how many teachers treat children poorly and rudely and how some also practice unethical behavior. I feel that the fifteen pages dedicated to telling teachers how to better treat children deserves its own chapter that should be applied to every student. Instead of talking about how academics can be tailored to the people-oriented child, the chapter tells the teacher how to help that type of child make friends. Making friends is fine and well but the information on teaching academics to that category of child is absent.
  
  This book is fantastic and I can't recommend it highly enough (despite the criticisms I've noted here). The book covers such large ground that to even comment on all of it is not possible. I love everything that Richard Lavoie says and would love to see America's schools embrace his recommendations that would cause a real education reform to happen. Perhaps that is something that teachers can change one classroom at a time to effect change from the inside without the administration, town, county or state even knowing it was happening.
  
  This book should be required reading for all teachers and for parents too. There are many things that readers can learn from the author's thirty-plus years of working with children, teachers and with children with learning disabilities. This is an amazing book, a summary of lots of ideas and philosophies combined into one work.
  
  Post Script Autism is not mentioned in this book. The book refers to ADD/ADHD and seems to deal more with children with other learning disabilities than Autism. I don't recall giftedness ever being mentioned (despite schools considering that 'special education' and it being a huge component of an individualized learning plan).

There is a fascinating characterization of early Chicago, for which the letters, which unlike most such documents escaped destruction in the Chicago Fire, are extraordinary first-hand evidence. There is also a brave and nuanced discussion of racial issues.
